I am pretty certain I remember something from Lolita with the words dolorous and vines in close proximity - I read it a couple months ago and remember that it stood out.
Also, I think Ludwig I is kind of... expected to be referred to when you're talking about Lola Montez.
"Or is it because I can imagine so well the rest of the colorful classroom around my dolorous and hazy darling:" is the only use of dolorous in Lolita, according to the search feature available at Amazon.
Oh and also there's the proverb 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions' in Good Intentions Paving Company, and there's the mention of Johnny Appleseed in No Provenance.
I have never actually read ‘Lolita’, though it is on my long list of books to read.
Because she has referenceg ‘Diluvian’ and ‘Antediluvian’ I think she must have an understanding of the Christian Bible (I have only ever attended church for weddings, and have never read the bible, so I had to look this up. Kenny wrote a song where he compared me to Cain and himself to Abel, and it was completely lost on me.). She has also mentioned that Nabokov is one of her favourite authors. It was up in the old ‘Quotes’ section. Also, Swansea, Buttonwillow, Lagunitas, and Calico, are all Gold Rush era towns in California. Two of them being Ghost Towns. As she grew up in a Gold Rush town relatively close to these places, and she even mentions ghost towns, I have a feeling that she and her family would go to these places on weekend outings. Even though the Assateague horse is native to Maryland and Virginia, the popular horse nove ‘Misty of Chincoteague’ is about an Assateague horse. The horses are actually Chincoteague ponies. They are called Assateague because they live on Assateague Island. Joanna mentions that she would like to be a wild horse, and there are two fairly large groups of feral Chincoteagues on Assateague. I bet she read ‘Misty’ as a child. She seems like one of those horse-loving little girls.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
I think the root is the same as "deluge" as in "après moi la deluge".
While we're on matters biblical, I suppose we ought to record the fairly obvious Bible references in '81. I wish I was as intelligent and well-read as everyone here ... I'd love to discover a reference that no-one else has for this thread, but no luck so far!
Throw away bible reference in Emily (I have a feeling this is one of those lines that everyone knows comes straight from the bible though, so sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious.)
Genesis Chpt 7 V 14: "They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings."
