Are there any words or phrases from her lyrics that you've noticed have made it into your everyday language, whether spoken or written?
I've begun to realize this more and more. I say "it's hard to gauge" an awful lot (from Autumn). "Inchoate" from Only Skin. "It's a hopeless endeavour" from Emily. Even "have one on me" is a phrase I never used to say before this past year.
My favourite world ever is 'mellifluous', so yes, yes she has. I use very florid language, lots of antiquated phrases and words. I guess she appeals to that.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
Yes, definitely, but I'm having a hard time thinking of examples. I am, however, quite proud to know the difference between meteor/meteorite/meteoroid thanks to her. So educational.
In speech, I hardly ever use formal language, much less complex vocabulary (I feel like it makes me sound pretentious/like a poser) but sometimes I like to pick pretty words out of her songs and illustrate them.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
I often use words I wouldn't think twice about and then have to explain them when people say, "Eh?" "Detritus"? Really? Are you even considered a native-level speaker of the language if you don't know the word "detritus"? I knew most of the obscure words Joanna uses before I started listening to her, though I might have picked up a few sort of country-ish terms from her.
I have always had a very bizarre and thorough vocabulary. I mentioned \'disdain\' once, and some douche redneck did know what I was talking about. When I was four I used to say \'I am a vewwy awticuwate wittew guhrl\'. I feel your pain, Jordie-pie. I say \'if I had my druthers\' much. And Thankee.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
I'm a fan of being articulate, but I really can't stand when people try to use more complex words when simpler terms would've done. Poetic > Complex in terms of descriptions for me. Just have to draw a line between articulating what you want to express correctly and ... talking normally.
I tend to be speak quite simply and colloquially with friends. It's when I'm being sarcastic or emphatic that the big, difficult words come out. I use them like knock-out punches. Which I have to, because we all swear so much that it's lost all meaning.
Yeah, I think I speak quite simply too. It's pretty rare that I use a word someone doesn't understand, though once I was surprised when an instructor in one of my classes had no idea what liminal meant, which I was using in a presentation. I know how rude it sounds to say, "Really? You don't know what that means?" but when I say that I do it out of genuine surprise.
The other day I wrote down easy-to-sound-out but fun words for a boy I'm tutoring. He had an uproar about persnickety: "That's not a real word!" I'm gonna throw a little mellifluous and ululate at him next.
My little brother is so stubborn. He said to me today \' I weared that shirt!\'. It took me a good 10 minutes to convince him that the word is \'wore\'.
