Interesting analysis, madpawn. I think Weirdelves is right, though: there was not a lot of "interplay" between songs, and once they were out, there was no mechanism to accurateky determine the 'minor places'. Having said that, I think the order for Ys was spot on (but maybe this was to be expected, as the Ys songs generally went furthest and so were subjected to voters' scrutiny more often). I wouldn't have too many disputes with the order for HOOM either (though personally I'd raise Soft As Chalk and Ribbon Bows, and push down You & Me, Bess and No Provenance, though they'd be my preferences and not really borne out by the votes). But MEM does seem to be rather 'messed up', doesn't it!
I have been taking a look at how other fan sites run their song tournaments, too. I have to say that I don't think there is too much to learn from many of them, though some element of album-wise selection seems to be popular. Perhaps for any future edition of the JNST, I would (a) find a way of determining "minor placings" somewhat better than this straight knock-out, and (b) make it quicker ... I did sense an element of voter-fatigue towards the end! At least we now have a pretty decent starting point for determining initial seedings...
Jordan - I am glad to see that we share an opinion of AV. I could also add that the winner will be the song that is least disliked, rather than the one most adored.
Your amusing comments, though, do raise a more serious question (far more serious than the pointles UK parliament, until we are able to shake off the Evil Usurpers, that is) about how a future JNST might be structured. When I have finished my survey of song tournaments that I have found online, I will post all the details I can find of how these have been conducted, but for now I would be interested to learn whether MilkyMoon readers prefer the idea of pairings - choosing between exactly two songs - or if you would be happier to be presented with a small group (3, 4, more?) to place in order or select a favourite.
I do take on board the comments about the collaborations and other rarities that were made earlier in the JNST, but I also feel that they do have a place somewhere in the event. I think the appropriate compromise would be to have some sort of Qualifying Round, where all of these 'oddments' are matched up against one another, and those who are familiar with them can then vote to bring them down to just a handful. If we then post links to these qualifiers, other people who do not know then can be encouraged to give them a listen before incorporating them in with the main body of Joanna's work in the tournament proper.
To clarify, I voted yes to AV - not because I think it's a good voting system, more because FPTP is potentially the worst, and because the Tories didn't want me to. The radical left were divided almost 50/50 on it, and no one seemed to be quite able to agree whether it would result in far left political ideologies being better or worse represented. I shouldn't really be voting at all since it grants legitimacy to the state, but I figured it wouldn't do any harm. If we really must have parliamentary democracy I'd rather have something even marginally closer to proportional representation until the revolution comes.
Structuring it more like an election than a tournament might be interesting. There's always the potential in the tournament that a song doesn't make a very good showing purely because of what it was paired with - that Only Skin would come out on top was pretty much a foregone conclusion, but the order of the remaining places could have been influenced by the pairings, as you pointed out, and you did take measures to try to prevent that. Joking aside, a preferential voting system for all of the songs would be quick, fairly easy to organise (I imagine), and it'd provide an interesting point of comparison to the tournament's results.
Steve, thank you so much for doing this! It was a lot of fun, and would be a really cool annual thing to do. I really appreciate the effort you put in. I'm nerdy enough to really enjoy reading statistics, and so all the extra data you provided was great.
About the results, I like them pretty well. Fairly in line with my opinions (only skin and in california are my favorite songs by her). lol.
Although I must say, I was very surprised about how poorly Jackrabbits and Soft As Chalk did. Especially SAC. I thought people liked that one? It lost to frickin '81.
Numerous interesting points there, across the board! As for the political points, we'll probably have to agree to differ on almost every issue (except that we agree democracy is shot!)
But as for the JNST issues, I would like to do another one. Not just yet, of course - I think perhaps a Christmas thing or early in 2012 would be about as early as would be viable. That's because it's quite time-consuming, but also because it might devalue the one just ended (and probably the second one) if they follow too closely.
Some kind of AV system could well be beneficial (I have no real objection to it in this context) and it would enable a better method of ranking the lower songs. Another option is something like the dreaded Eurovision method, or perhaps the F1 system, in which points are allocated in a inear or logarithmic scale ...
LawnsOfDawns ... thank you to for your appreciation: it was your idea, of course. I too thought SAC (and Baby Birch) would perform better ... but Jackrabbits still doesn't quite hit the spot for me. Great way of discovering opinions, though...
no surprise that is only skin, a lil bit dissapointing to me...but glad that s&d arrived in 3 sorry for not writing a report steve, i'm ashamed but also very busy and i didn't wrote that pleased me
Hello, I was interested in this vote but I don't come here often and I'd like to know the result, but I don't want to read the 24 pages or something...
It would be nice to had kept the first post updated with latest results, so we can know where we're at just by reading the first post
Any link to final results ?
edit : nevermind I just saw all the result was page 23. But still it would have been nice to link to the post in the first post, for new comers ^^
