Just 24 hours (& a few minutes) to go in the first Joanna Newsom Song Tournament. Thank you to all those who have participated, and if you have not yet cast your votes for pairings 13, 14 & 15 ... what are you waiting for?!
Yes - Weirdelves is correct! He did in fact write the two pieces on Cosmia - and very grateful for them I was too. I accidentally credited these to elseanio in error. Elseanio kindly contributed one for Go Long, Weirdelves did two for Cosmia and one for Go Long.
Thank you to all, and apologies for my error (it's 3am )
And thank you Weirdelves, madpawn, and ursulabear. I am touched! Ohh I like the idea of an "honorary title" ... I see that I am listed as a Seahorse on the members list, and that's nice (I guess it's derived from the number of postings, as the people who are Seahorses all have approx similar numbers of postings), but if I had to choose a one-worder from Joanna's cannon for myself, it would be a mis-heard one: Inkboy (from Flying A Kite).
As promised, I have been doing a bit more analysis of the results, and below I list an ordering of all the songs that were included. I used a quite complicated method (and one that was described in my text book as 'an informal way of ordering objects about which incomplete information is known about their relation to other objects'). Underneath, I describe the method, for anyone who is interested. I did NOT use the method with respect to the first six songs, as it did not wholly agree with the result from the formal JNST, which I think should over-ride this method - but it did at least come up with the same songs in the top six)!

METHOD: A total of 57 songs received at least a part of a vote throughout the tournament. A grid of 57 rows & 57 columns was set up in the form of a matrix (M'), in which I logged the number of votes that each song scored against each other song, where they had been paired together: the intersection of row x with column y showed the votes achieved by song x against song y. (Where two songs were paired together more than once, the higher figure was used. Where three (or more) songs were in a group, if the scores were A 20, B 5, C 1, then this is recorded as row A col B 20; row A col C 20; row B col A 5, row B col C 5, row C col A 1, row C col B 1). Next, each figure was replaced by a fraction (between 0 and 1) denoting the proportion of votes won by song x against song y, as against those won by song y against song x. Where two songs had not met, this is represented by a fifgure 0 in both places. All the figures along the leading diagonal (ie a song against itself) are represented by a 0. Thus matrix M' has been modified by a process I term 'unitising', to form a new matrix called M. I then calculate the matrix product MM, to give a new matrix N', and unitise this to give N. This is a form of the order 2 dominance matrix. Calculating MN and unitising the product gives the order 3 dominance matrix, O; and in the same way I went on to calculate the order 4 and order 5 dominance matrices, P and Q. I stopped at order 5, as there were 5 rounds of play, and to go any further would not generate any 'new' information.
The next step is to add up the numbers in each row of the order 1 dominance matrix, to give the total number of one-stage dominances for each song. The total of these 57 numbers is calculated, and each of the individual numbers is divided by the total and multiplied by 57 to standardise these figures to a consistent scale. This step is repeated for the order 2 dominance matrix, and then the order 3, 4 & 5 dominance matrices, in each case standardising the figures at each stage by dividing by the total at that stage and multiplying by 57.
Finally, these five numbers are added together for each song, to produce an adjusted total number of dominances of orders 1 to 5. Using these figures, the songs are ordered in descending order (except that the order of the first six is over-ridden by the actrual finishing order in the Round 5 group).

Here are the rankings of the tracks within each album, for those curious—in fact, some are quite surprising to me:
THE MILK-EYED MENDER
1. Swansea 2. Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie 3. Sadie 4. The Book of Right-On 5. Peach, Plum, Pear 6. Sprout and the Bean 7. This Side of the Blue 8. "En Gallop" 9. Bridges and Balloons 10. Inflammatory Writ 11. Cassiopeia 12. Three Little Babes
1. In California 2. Go Long 3. Have One On Me 4. Baby Birch 5. Kingfisher 6. Good Intentions Paving Co. 7. Easy 8. On a Good Day 9. You and Me, Bess 10. Does Not Suffice 11. '81 12. Soft as Chalk 13. No Provenance 14. Esme 15. Occident 16. Ribbon Bows 17. Jackrabbits 18. Autumn
I guess the aspect of the tournament that was random tracks pitted against each other resulted in some of those results madpawn. I don't think anyone would put Jackrabbits as the second worst track on the album. Or maybe they would. I like to think not.
