Joanna Newsom Song-of-the-Week

How would you feel about starting a weekly song discussion? Like, each week, a topic is started about one of Joanna's songs, and we discuss that song in depth for that week?

The song schedule would be decided beforehand by people nominating themselves to lead topics (if someone posts wanting to lead a topic on "Go Long", for example, they are added to the bottom of the list). Then the opening post for each topic would contain analysis/review of the song by the topic leader, along with maybe a video of their favourite version, or perhaps trivia or something.

The nature of each analysis would be reflective of the person writing it - how they choose to analyse it (i.e. musically, lyrically, emotionally), the reason for choosing the song, how the topic is led - and would give one person a platform to speak and be heard, if only for a week, helping further some kind of community cohesion. I dunno, I think it might be a nice way to celebrate and enjoy Joanna in this (ungodly lengthy) post-album, post-tour period, and possibly help us to appreciate some of her songs a lot more. She does have over 40 released songs now  it would certainly last a fair while if we did it.

(Anyway, I'm pretty much new here, but I've been selfishly consuming your resources for far too long to not do something productive :shifty: )

Idea stolen in its entirety from an unrelated Björk forum

Was it really an unrelated Björk forum or was it the related Björk 4um? Whatever the case, it's a good idea, I like it! "Open your hymn books at page...", hehe. There's not been a lot of discussion of the music around here lately, it'd be nice to have an impetus.

I like the idea. I usually enjoy reading the insights people have about Joanna and her music. That said, I'll be the first to volunteer not stepping up onto the platform. If you've been around here a while, and if you've paid any attention to the things I've said, you will already know that I don't hear or listen to Joanna's music that way. If you don't know that about me, then consider yourself one of the fortunate. I won't repeat it...for now. So, I eagerly await reading the ideas of those of you who do listen to her music that way.

Yes, yes, yes! I'm so excited for this! Yessss! I'm almost interested in nominating songs I don't feel I understand very well to try and get a better understanding, but truthfully, I feel a bit shaky on a lot of her songs, so it's not as if I'd be speaking very authoritatively about any.

As the song I feel closest to, I'd be willing to volunteer myself to tackle Baby Birch. :) (Also, I nominate Tom to have a go at Go Long since we were promised an analysis quite some time ago. :glee: )

When would we start? I really hope people participate. Discussing Joanna Newsom songs in depth is one of my favorite things in the world. :D

Haha I will happily write up a bare-bones outline of my Go Long analysis I reckon it works pretty well. Surprised you remember annabelle.

I like the idea a lot :D Don't know if I'll be able to analyse the songs because my english should be much better, but I would be glad to read all of your toughts (and learn some english meanwhile).

Wait so am I supposed to be starting this? If so it'll have to wait a few days I'll need a good spare hour or so to recollect and articulate my thoughts on Go Long and I'm a busy man eh.

Well, I'm willing to start. In fact, I may have written up a rough little analysis of Baby Birch yesterday ... But I thought we might be waiting for more people to sign up? Which no one has. Come on!

Well okay then, anyone who want's to participate, submit the song you want to do and when you generally want to do it, and I'll update the first post with a schedule. If ann wants to start with Baby Birch, I'll happily go second with On A Good Day (since I don't think I can review it without Baby Birch going first )

Although if you are generally just offering out of politeness rather than actually wanting to go first, I'll start with Monkey & Bear or Have One On Me or something~

Instead of continually editing this post we could just make a new thread for each track, that way the conversation can go on and will remain there beyond the week if we want it to.

Oh yes, each song would have its own thread certainly, it's just this thread would be for sorting out the schedule :)

Now I'm embarrassed to go first. I'm like an awkward high schooler with a class presentation. I'll still sign up for Baby Birch, but you may begin, Andrew, if you'd like. :)

I could do Monkey and Bear or Emily, which I've written about before for school, or In California.

The person who starts doesn't have to write a giant essay. They could just give some preliminary thoughts / points for discussion.
