So as expected, Have One On Me is one of the Album of the Year nominees in Pitchfork's Readers Poll. However, Good Intentions Paving Company, In California, Occident, On a Good Day, and Soft as Chalk are all nominated for Best Song of 2010.
You can write in your song choice too, but I found the batch they chose to be interesting.
Anyways, everybody should vote! I've been a bit disappointed in HOOM's placement on yearly lists so far (it didn't even make NPR's list!), so it would be awesome to see it do well. Voting ends on the 11th.
I'm really VERY surprised that Occident and On A Good Day made it on there. I like OAGD but there are so many other better songs on the album... in my opinion at least. Oh well! Some people are still shocked by songs over 5 minutes...
and some people are still shocked by albums with more than one disc let alone three. HOOM made NPR's list of nominees but I find it a bit disconcerting the album did NOT make their staff picks for the year.
Spin and Rolling Stone are a joke. They're like the bible for the "cool dad" demographic. In fact, my "cool dad" apparently thought it'd be "cool" to get me a subscription to Rolling Stone, even though I told him to cancel it years ago because it's a waste of money. But after my birthday this year, I suddenly started receiving them again. What is he thinking? Then again, I think Pitchfork is a joke, too. Not sure which publications/blogs I actually like anymore. GvsB is a'ight. I used to like Under the Radar, but I haven't read a physical music magazine in ages. I'm really sick and tired of how most of the music blogs have been jizzing over this chillwave bullshit recently. Where is a vomit icon, plz?
Music magazines are only going to be relevant to the people whose musical tastes are reflected in them. Becca, if you aren't into the music promoted in Rolling Stone, and your dad knows that, it's pretty foolish of him to keep buying it for you. You can tell him I said so.
Well, my guess would be that my dad doesn't know that. I told him a few years ago the last time he got me a subscription, but he must have forgotten. I don't know, his memory is apparently pretty bad. Also, I hate to seem ungrateful for a gift, but I would hate for him to spend money renewing the subscription.
Well, your dad and I must have different ideas on what constitutes a good gift. I prefer to give someone what they want, just as I prefer the same consideration be given to me. I don't buy my kids or grandchildren any gifts without first doing a little "research" to find out what they hope to get. That said, I still get useless things from my oldest daughter on my birthday or at Christmas. She always buys me what 'she' thinks is cute or funny...things that I almost never use. If I say anything at all about it, she gets mad. So, I just let it go, year after year.
