Great News!

Have spoken with Drag City and they and Joanna have given their OK for a benefit covers album!

Proceeds will go to help the 20 million homeless from floods in Pakistan

Details to come!

I have begun the process of producing it and am now taking suggestions - please suggest your top 5 covers

a selection of 175 covers can be found here
http://joannanewsom.mirocommunity.org/category/covers

NOTE: The first artist approached to take part was honored to be asked and is in!
PS: If anyone would like to assist with this project, please send me a PM, thanks!

I made this new forum post to cover this thing as it seems to be building steam, grats to Wanbli for the timely and excellent idea!

Seems we have two items to cover right away:

1) the song choices, and if we can get big names bravo, but just fans should make up the bulk of this it seems to me

2)Album names, here i am thinking we need excellent suggestion to put before Joanna and Drag City...cross ref Joanna's words and the devistaion there?

noted trav

We have a tentative working title as well as an overwhelming response and a significant number of artists going into the studio in the next couple of weeks to record. The title will most likely be be straight forward and not a direct or indirect reference to the disaster.

We are still reaching out for a few more tracks based on feedback from the community here

Once all the responses are in from artists and the tracklist is set, we will make an announcement

Thanks!

Cosmia

In certain circumstances (length of song, style of cover, solo vs band, signed artist vs a fan, etc) multiple versions of one song are being considered- so feel free to PM me a link or info, etc.

The selections are just about finished, as is the artist lineup- waiting on a few replies. I can say one of the artists you mentioned is contributing their version of On a Good Day to the project :)

Final confirmed tracklist:

On a Good Day
Swansea
Monkey & Bear
Book of Right On
Easy
Sprout & the Bean
In California
Peach, Plum, Pear
Baby Birch
Soft As Chalk
En Gallop
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
Autumn
This Side of the Blue
Go Long
Sadie
'81
Colleen
Inflammatory Writ
Sawdust & Diamonds
Bridges & Balloons

Tom

Once all the tracks are in, there will be several listening sessions to determine the best tracking order for the listener in a balanced manner. This is not a single artist and all of the pieces are not designed to fit into one cohesive listening experience.

This is more a compilation of individual artists and their interpretations- as such each track should stand on it's own.

A collection of singles works well in today's digital only distribution model where portable players, playlists, mixes and short attention spans are the norm.

But of course- doublewuzzy and I are talking now.
I would do an entire cover album with him - if other artists didn't have fan bases that would help benefit this needy cause

Is this still going on? I do covers of "Inflammatory Writ" and "Bridges and Balloons", and would love to participate if I can get a decent recording going...as of now, I've only done them live. :P

Oh darn! Well, like I said, I have no good recordings of either, and I don't know when I would have a chance to make a decent recording. All I have at my disposal is garageband and a bottom-of-the-line computer mic. I tried recording "Inflammatory Writ" the other day, but it sounded like ass in a bottle! Perhaps if I were more acoustically knowledgeable I could find a way to work with what I have better, but more than likely getting a decent recording would involve getting a friend to help me. And who knows how long it'd take to make that happen! :P
Funny thing is, I've been working on learning songs for a cover show next week for which I was told "anything goes." I took that to mean I could play whatever I wanted and spent a couple weeks working on covers by like, 10 different artists. Two days ago I got asked to confirm what band I was doing. I was like "band? I'm supposed to pick one?" "Yes, just like the blah blah blah benefit..." Well, I hadn't been to the last show like this so I guess that's my bad?
ANYway, long story short, since I already know 2 Joanna songs, I decided to go with her, because 2 is better than 1. So now I am working on learning 2-4 more Jo songs by next week. D%
Coulda picked a less challenging artist, I suppose, but I like to make things difficult for myself. So yes...if something like this ever happens again, I should have a whole catalog of Joanna songs to choose from!

well. last evening one artist informed me he is in a similar situation, but due to school and other commitments he won't make the deadline- so I may have an opening- in particular for Inflammatory Writ

I really need you to private message me your email address :)

I have an idea to perhaps assist you in recording it in a studio
