Thank you for your votes, madpawn, under a CPell, and milkisobel.
I'm sure you're not the only HOOM lover, milkisobel! As for your alternatives for group 10, I will be counting the second set on the basis that it's your favourite version of each song.
Here are my votes. This was so hard!!! Especially Group 6 for me was absolutely deadly, I love them all so :'( Group 8 was hard too. I had to resort to some ties this time 'round.
Group 1 1. In California (4) 2. On A Good Day 3. Swansea
Group 2 1. Easy 2. Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne 3. Monkey & Bear
Group 3 1. Good Intentions Paving Co. 2. Time, As A Symptom 2. Baby Birch
Group 4 1. Cosmia 2. A Pin-Light Bent 3. Yarn And Glue
Group 5 1. Have One On Me (4) 2. Sadie 3. Goose Eggs
Group 6 1. Ribbon Bows (4) 1. Only Skin (4) 3. Anecdotes
Group 7 1. You Will Not Take My Heart Alive (4) 2. Kingfisher 3. Colleen
Group 8 1. Divers (4) 1. Sawdust & Diamonds (4) 3. Soft As Chalk
I'm glad that both Autumn and Leaving the City made it to this round, as well as Goose Eggs. But as others have said, this was really hard! Her catalogue has so many amazing songs that comparing them is a bit futile. I was bummed that some of my favourite songs from Divers, the title track and Anecdotes, were both pitted against Ys tracks in this round which I feel compelled to vote for. At least Sapokanikan will probably make it through. Group 5 was difficult. It included my favourite song from MEM, my favourite song from HOOM, and a beloved song (if not my absolute favourite) from Divers. Ugh. Groups 6, 7, and 8 all presented similarly difficult choices.
GROUP 1 In California Swansea = On A Good Day
GROUP 2 Monkey & Bear (4) Easy Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
GROUP 3 Baby Birch Good Intentions Paving Co. Time, As a Symptom
GROUP 4 Cosmia (4) A Pin-Light Bent Yarn And Glue *
GROUP 5 Have One On Me Sadie Goose Eggs *
GROUP 6 Only Skin = Anecdotes (4) Ribbon Bows
GROUP 7 Colleen Kingfisher You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
GROUP 8 Sawdust & Diamonds Divers Soft As Chalk
GROUP 9 Sapokanikan (4) ’81 Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
GROUP 10 Emily Autumn Peach, Plum, Pear
GROUP 11 Go Long Leaving The City "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!)
Thank you for your votes, solfatara and Headless_Caboose.
I agree with you both - it's becoming very difficult. I think the competition has reached 'critical mass', where we regret almost any song now being knocked out! Looking down the 33 songs in this draw, personally there are only two that surprised me (by which I mean, didn't chime with my preferences) ... but then there are about 11 songs that didn't make it this far (including 4 that were placed last in their group in Round 2) - which would mean that in my ideal world, there would have been 42 songs in the top 33!
Of the two I referred to above, they were both in the same group, and I noticed that solfatara placed one of them first in her choices, and Headless_Caboose placed the other one first in hers, so I guess that demonstrates that even what some think of as a weaker song is appreciated well by others, which probably just means I am missing something in them
It does, however, raise an important question, which is the very nature of the JNST itself. I've generally shied away from placing songs in pairs, because that can be pretty terminal for a song if it happens to come up against another that's really popular. However, placing them in triples, with only one to advance + an occasional best-runner-up, also leaves little room for a 'safety net'. Do we accept this as 'the luck of the draw', or would we prefer, for future editions, a wider set of choices in each group, with space for more 'runners-up'? One possibility is to include each song in more than one group, so even if a song gets a particularly unlucky / unfavourable group, it would have a chance to go through in another group. I'm thinking this through as I write this, but actually there is the basis of an idea there ... At the moment, I seed the draw, to place songs that have done well in the past up against those that haven't, but in a way that's rather self-perpetuating. However, perhaps the way forward is to make the draw completely random ... but to reward the songs that have done well in the past with multiple entries, whereas the obscure collaborations etc would be limited to one or at most two. Unless she puts out another album next year (and that's got to be unlikely), I'll have a bit more time to consider how the next one will work, but I am already thinking this may be a good idea...
One more point - it was unfortunate for Headless_Caboose that her favourites from two different albums turned up in the same group. (Sorry - I promise I didn't do that on purpose!) But I did jiggle the draw a bit for this round (and in fact the previous one, and, for what it's worth, the one before that) to try to ensure that songs from the same album were kept apart as far as possible. I messed up very slightly, as Groups 1 & 3 both contain two songs from HOOM, whereas Group 4 contains none. With 12 songs from that album, there should have been 10 groups with one song, and one with two.
I'm a bit late here, but I'll give my votes anyway. This is my first time doing this, so hopefully I didn't mess up. It was hard to choose between so many great songs.
GROUP 1 1. Swansea 2. In California 3. On a Good Day
GROUP 2 1. Monkey and Bear 2. Easy 2. Waltz of the 101st Lightborne
GROUP 3 1. Good Intentions Paving Co 2. Baby Birch 3. Time, As a Symptom
GROUP 4 1. Cosmia 1. A Pin Light Bent 2. Yarn and Glue
GROUP 5 1. Have One On Me (4) 2. Sadie 3. Goose Eggs
GROUP 6 1. Only Skin (4) 2. Anecdotes 3. Ribbon Bows
GROUP 7 1. Kingfisher (4) 2. Colleen 2. You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
GROUP 8 1. Sawdust and Diamonds (4) 2. Soft as Chalk 2. Divers
Hi source of the light - welcome to the JNST, and thank you for your first votes: you didn't mess up at all
Votes for this round should be closing around Saturday night UK time.
After that, the final stage will be contested as a series of pairings, with each song in the top 12 paired with each of the others in rotation (and probably with a Division 2 and Division 3 as well). Please remember to check back every 4 or 5 days as the pairings will only be open for a few days each. The reason for this is that I want to 2015 competition to end in 2015, and I didn't want to start the main part of the competition until Divers had a chance to seep into our brains.
Voting is now finished for Round Three, and the results are as follows:
GROUP 1 24.5 In California 15.5 On A Good Day 15.0 Swansea GROUP 2 20.5 Monkey & Bear 19.0 Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne 17.5 Easy GROUP 3 20.5 Baby Birch 19.0 Good Intentions Paving Co. 18.5 Time, As a Symptom GROUP 4 27.0 Cosmia 21.0 A Pin-Light Bent 09.0 Yarn And Glue * GROUP 5 29.0 Have One On Me 16.5 Sadie 13.5 Goose Eggs * GROUP 6 27.0 Only Skin 20.5 Anecdotes 11.5 Ribbon Bows GROUP 7 23.0 Kingfisher 20.5 You Will Not Take My Heart Alive 14.5 Colleen GROUP 8 * 23.3 Sawdust & Diamonds 18.8 Divers 15.8 Soft As Chalk GROUP 9 26.5 Sapokanikan 17.5 ’81 14.0 Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie GROUP 10 27.0 Emily 18.0 Peach, Plum, Pear 13.0 Autumn GROUP 11 25.5 Go Long 19.5 Leaving The City 14.0 "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!)
I had planned to have a 12-song deciding round, with one 'best loser' joining the 11 group winners, but it is not obvious whether that should be the runner-up from group 2 or group 3, so I will go with eleven finalists. There will also be two 'placing' divisions below the main final, to decide positions 12-22 and 23-33. These will consist of the eleven runner-up songs, and the eleven third-placed songs respectively.
I will shortly post the first set of pairings for the Final Round.

Please cast your votes for your favoured song in each of the pairings below, and then check back in about 5 days time for the results of these, and the next set of pairings for your votes.
Please note that, because there are an odd number of songs in each division, there will always be one pairing missing per set. Here it is A3, B3, C3, A10, B10, and C10. Have fun!

Hi Madpawn, Jordan~, and Under a CPell. Thank you for getting the final off to a flying start with your speedy votes. Ties are OK, and I'm actually expecting quite a few of them, as the Divers material is still so new and not so easy to assess in the con ext of other, more familiar material.

Steve - I like your ideas for changing up the voting methods in next year's tournament. I think including songs in more than one group is a good idea, to give them more than one chance to proceed.
