RIGHT-ON / Inherent Vice

the talking of the tadpoles

I was not prepared for the amount of Joanna in this film. If you haven't seen it, it's worth the watch just for her. She narrates the entire thing, but also has a good half dozen of her own scenes too! Not the greatest movie by any stretch of the imagination otherwise, to be honest.

Academy Awards nominations have been announced today. Joanna's film (Inherent Vice) beats Andy's film (The Lego Movie) with 2 nominations (Best Costume Design and Best Original Screenplay) against 1 (Best Song).

A friend who saw it ordered me to do so. I'm going to soon! I think next week, I have time... I'm especially intrigued after Joanna talking about her experience of reading the book (which I haven't done, myself) as one of constantly adjusting her expectations for what sort of story it was, and Paul Anderson having captured that feeling in his adaptation. Because, honestly? From the trailer, it looks overstimulating for me. But if Joanna saw something in the story... it must be worth sitting down to.

And she really can act. Although we shouldn't be surprised. Her comic timing in the Portlandia sketch was impeccable!

Inherent Vice! I just finished it a couple of days ago. Big Pynchon fan, and although it doesn't near the scope of Gravity's Rainbow it's definitely worth a read (or two). Joanna was perfectly cast as Sortilege- the character is obsessed with a mythical sunken city called Lemuria which definitely reminds me of Ys. Can't wait to see the movie!
