What I really love about Colleen, in addition to everything that Tom said (and I feel very much the same way about the allegory and its meaning) is the rhythms she adds into it. They're strange and syncopated, but somehow catchy and easy to follow. I don't know how Joanna discovered the very-specific type of percussion she uses (and has sort of used since the Ys street band EP as well as live shows around this time) but it works for her perfectly.
I have to say, however, that of all the songs in this second round, my favorite is still Monkey & Bear. Now that's a motherfucking allegory.
Yeah really agree on the Monkey and Bear comparison, in my original post on Colleen which was cruelly deleted I was thinking about how these two are her clearest fables, Monkey and Bear I love because beneath the disney sheen it's very, very dark. I always shudder a little inside when I heard 'the organ would grind dregs of song / for the pleasure of the children who'd shriek / hurling coins at her feet and recoiling in terror'.
Or how about how monkey and bear starts? I LOVE the beginning. The simple harmony with no backing, that off-center "they", and then the strings and bassoon come in. I think Van Dyke parks did a fantastic job on this song.
Also, dat french horn at the end of the first phrase...
100% AGREED on the VDP arrangment of Monkey and Bear... just every way in which that song is arranged is utterly perfect. I think it's the perfection of the Ys sound.
