Just added to this fall's lineup is Joanna Newsom, making her Hollywood Bowl debut opening for Wilco on September 30, 2012, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

Just eight years ago, Joanna Newsom was playing keyboards with a San Francisco group and writing songs on the harp more or less as an exercise, taping them just to remember how she put them together. One thing led to another, and her home-recordings seemed worthy enough to sell at shows. They fell into some influential hands, feet, and eventually into the paws of Drag City, who asked her to make a record. The Milk-Eyed Mender was recorded in late 2003 with Noah Georgeson at the board, highlighting the awesome dynamic range of Joanna’s harp and the delightful qualities of her voice. A relentless touring schedule followed, matched by continued and growing interest in the newness of her sound.

In 2006, Joanna got down to her second album, Ys. Conceived as a song-cycle with orchestrations scored by Van Dyke Parks, the emotional landscape of the songs (and the movements therein) produced marvelous arrangements. The first pressing sold out all across the world. (The packaging for the vinyl and CD were an intense challenge, involving a booklet, an o-card for the disc and...gilding.) 2007 passed in a blur of tour dates as Ys soared to new heights, most excitingly in the selected places where Joanna and her Ys Street Band were booked with orchestral backing, including her debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The following years were largely spent executing the songs for the record that would become Have One On Me. As with Ys, a number of new songs had been brought forward earlier, during the concerts of ’07 and ’08. It’s a triple album produced by Newsom herself and mixed by long-time collaborators Jim O'Rourke and Noah Georgeson, with the accompanying arrangements by Ryan Francesconi. It got sequenced and adorned with lovely new-phase art in the history and career of Joanna Newsom, who’s been touring since.

The Hollywood Bowl is located at 2301 N Highland Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif. Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl 2012 summer season are available now at HollywoodBowl.com or via credit card phone order at 323.850.2000. For more information, call 323.850.2000.

Well, it makes sense; Jeff Tweedy is a fan! The first time I saw her it was at a show that he curated. He gave a really nice speech before her set about how he was asked to choose bands or artists who represented the "music of the future" and he chose her and The Handsome Family.

The first was by opener Newsom, who over eight years has carved a singular path through the world of popular music with her graceful, wildly beatific internal narratives.

With a voice that conjured Joni Mitchell but not intentionally so, Newsom lifted her sound to the heavens on a whim during “In California.” A song about the California of her heart, she described a darkened internal realm where night comes “so fast it feels like some kind of mistake” and “walleyed deer, quiet as gondoliers” move across the land.

Newsom’s set, in fact, seemed destined to be performed under the stars on the Bowl’s stage, a surprising turn considering her most high-profile Los Angeles performance to date was as headliner at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2007, where the venue’s fanciness -- and a 28-piece orchestra -- gilded her music in shimmering riches.

At the Bowl, playing as a trio with collaborators Ryan Francesconi and Neal Morgan, Newsom’s set felt more rustic. Pared down, Newsom offered mostly acoustic-based music that suggested an elegant weaving of British and American folk, early European classical music, and baroque pop. Moving to a grand piano, Newsom banged out the bawdy "Inflammatory Writ,” from her 2004 debut, “The Milk-Eyed Mender.” She closed with “Cosmia,” from her 2006 collaboration with composer Van Dyke Parks.
