Do you not think the fact that Steve, Jordan and I all had the same response to what you said implies that if we didn't understand what you said, it was you who had been unclear rather than us?

I would agree that Joanna isn't a very 'fan-friendly' artist, but I don't have much of a problem with it. She obviously likes her privacy, and we should respect that. It is annoying sometimes when she goes for a long time without performing new material, but she doesn't have *that* much of a gap between releasing albums; there were only two years between MEM and Ys, and even though there was a four-year gap between Ys and HOOM, I'd say she more than made up for it by releasing a triple album. I would rather she took her time between writing/releasing music of a really high quality, rather than releasing loads of albums and singles very close together and risk having them all sounding very similar and too simplistic. If she was in magazines and on tv all the time like other more mainstream artists, we probably wouldn't have as much respect for her music or for her as a person.

I think if you are listening to live stuff on the internet its fine, but I don't like that the studio versions are on YouTube.

Reminds me of another favorite artist of mine, Charlotte Martin. She has this fan package that comes with all sorts of things - for 80 bucks. I wish I could, but I can't afford that right now. Whoever buys the fan package gets a new track per month (I think there are like 15 so far?)

Anyway, she is totally fan friendly and open about her life on her Facebook page, etc. I've met her, and she's a very relatable person/mom. I would never steal these tracks from her. It's her livelihood. I just couldn't do it. And I'm glad they aren't showing up on YouTube.

I think Joanna is good to her fans. She signs autographs, meets them, etc.

still at it, polliwog, you nitwit! most of you probably don't recognize my screen name, but i've been a casual reader here for years. i check in only when i'm looking for information, which isn't too often given my JN Google Alert. this morning i was curious about the ACL show and if there was an air date. instead, what do i find? polliwog spouting some mindless dribble. come on, dude. you don't buy her albums, yet you defecate all over a forum about her? open your wallet and buy that shit or shut the fuck up. i seriously don't know why people tolerate you.

I mentioned I was excited for her episode on facebook and ACL replied, "It broadcasts on PBS on jan. 21. Check your local listings."

I guess his choice of words was the problem. Otherwise, he was merely expressing the same sentiment a number of others have expressed over the years.

trav, i had it coming. the board shouldn't tolerate new members verbally attacking well respected, long standing members, especially not with that kind of language. that said, the warning doesn't bother me. a ban wouldn't prevent me from finding information here and i really have little interest in joining this community. it's unfortunate, as there are some kind folk it seems. so it goes.

Obviously it's up to her in what ways she wants to appeal to people, and of course fans don't have any right to try and influence her in any way (anyone think of Monkey and Bear? Dance Joanna, Dance! Dance for me, the sexist, MEM-pixie loving fan, and I'll love you still). She's repeatedly stated that it's the music she's trying to sell, not herself, and I feel like she's always regarded personal fame as an unfortunate side-effect of the industry she's in. It's a shame though, really, for bother me and her, that Joanna Newsom the person is so goddamn interesting; I'm a pretty big fan of both the music and the person.

That said, it's her choice to reveal information about herself, just like it's her choice to make music, etc., and we need to really make the distinction between the different aspects of her public existence, between Joanna the personality and Joanna the artist, rather than meshing them together as one big sparkly JOANNA NEWSOM product. Honestly, a great album or a great live show is what is worth paying for - web interviews and twitter twat tweets and TV drams aren't worth it at all, and they're free anyway. If an artist is only interesting because of their fashion style, for example, i.e. their music is terrible, then why would I buy their album? I might buy a hat they designed, but not their album. As long as she's making great music I will definitely support her (although, tbh, if she released an autobiography, I'd support that too... ).

I am slightly frustrated with Joanna the artist, though. She obviously knew that we'd need a long time to fully appreciate every facet of Have One On Me (which could take years, tbh), but it's been SO long since we've had ANYTHING new from her, and it looks to be a long while yet too.

I don't think it's like she has five albums up her sleeve and she's just waiting for the right moment to reveal them. It's not a matter of her waiting for us to digest HOOM as much as waiting for her muse to strike. I can understand that it takes a long time for her to release something: it seems like she doesn't churn out music for the sake of having something to release, which is a good thing, in my view. She waits till she's written music anyway, then tries to get it perfect, and only then do we get to listen to it (unless she tests it out while she's touring, that is).

Yeah, of course it's more a sign that she's creatively drained, working at it slowly or just taking a break. I was probably mostly referring to the fact that HOOM does take a long time to appreciate, and even if she had finished 18 new songs by now (!), it probably isn't the best time to release them.

Deep down I know I'd prefer the same HOOM level of perfection, and so I, the fan, will have to control myself.
