Does Not Suffice

Her drummer/singer Neil Morgan opened the show. The performance and atmosphere was probably the best of the four times I've seen her (third time for this tour). However, the mix was a bit off, at least from the fifth row. The vocal mic at the piano was low but the one for the trombone was much too high compared to the rest of the instruments. All in all it was an amazing show.

Major OOPS. I suppose I was confused and thought about the D.C. show I saw in March. I'm a major fan, really. Not a poser. I just flaked. D%

Haha it's fine! We were sitting in the balcony so I don't know what the acoustics were downstairs, but it was perfect for us! Best sound I've heard all year!

I would have gladly joined you all in the balcony had they not made it a seated show. I took advantage of the chairs though I would have preferred more cushion. Aside from a few minors issues I enjoyed the sound from the floor. Maybe it would have sounded better had I sat closer to the center or to the mixing board. I've seen a couple of other shows at the National from the balcony so I know the acoustics work well. Imagine if Joanna played the Byrd Theatre (hint hint ... idea to raise money for roof repairs?). In retrospect I REALLY wish she'd played Sadie or at least Sprout and the Bean because I've had a hankering for both songs. Sprout jumped into my head later and people who saw her before our show said she busted out Sadie, sort of a rarity these days. However, she could sit at the piano eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I'd be OK with that.

I too was hoping for another Milk-Eyed Mender song, but I was just so happy she played, "Does Not Suffice," as well as, "Go Long," that I forgot about it. I've seen her play most of her MMM songs and saw the whole YS album played straight through, and so far I think this is the best show audibly and had the most personality, before she was really not very talkative. Not to say that those shows weren't incredible, but she seems to be more comfortble with herself. She hasn't been playing most songs off MMM for a long time just a select few. I honestly would like to hear, "Yarn and Glue," and "What we Have Known," a rare b-side that she never plays anymore. Glad you enjoyed it, it was a fantastic show.
