This was Joanna's Bay Area homecoming show - alot of family, friends, Mills College students, etc in attendance. Andy Strain on trombone is from Oakland as well. I saw 2 members of the band The Killers in the front row of the loge.
This show was interesting for a few reasons- no Baby Birch encore and instead we got the Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow song "Picture" covered by Robin on guitar and Joanna on piano. Before the song starts you can see Robin nervously sitting down and says "dear god" before he starts. See the video at end of post.
There was little to no banter in between songs and only 1 harp tuning session. Neal Morgan was silent, not a word all night.
Good Intentions has an extended jam section with the Newsom & Pecknold families playing percussion on stage.
Here is what I remember as the setlist- a song or two maybe out of order- any help appreciated
‘81 Have One On Me You And Me, Bess Inflammatory Writ Autumn Easy Soft As Chalk Kingfisher Good Intentions Paving Company( Featuring Robin Pecknold, Pete Newsom, Emily and other Newsom/Pecknold family members on percussion) Emily Peach, Plum, Pear
Encore: Picture w/ Robin Pecknold- (Kid Rock/Shery Crow Cover)
How about a little reasoning behind the disappointment?
At first I was a *tad* bummed we got no Baby Birch encore- but the incredible unique nature of the setting including the offbeat duet encore put this up there as perhaps the 3rd best show I have seen Joanna perform out of the 8 I have seen
I was at last night's performance in Oakland. I absolutely loved it! I must admit that the first half of the set list was on fire, while the second half lost a bit of energy. I was also disappointed that she didn't perform "In California," "On a Good Day," or "Baby Birch." But overall I was in musical heaven. Her band was extraordinary.
This is the 3rd show I've seen at the Fox Theater, and it is by far the best. But there is something about this theater that sucks the life out of performances. Perhaps it's too large. Maybe it's cursed. I don't know. But I saw Animal Collective and Magnetic Fields at the Fox, and they were among the most underwhelming performances I have seen ever. And they are both amazing bands. Luckily Joanna didn't fall in this category. She was luminous!
I have seen a dozen shows at the Fox since it re-opened- even worked at a couple.
The room is very large for it's capacity- spacious is a good description. It is also beautiful and majestic and can overwhelm some performers.
If you compare it to venues in the Bay Area like the Warfield & Fillmore- it doesn't have that tight, homey feel for many shows- no lines at bars- as there are many, the circulation and ventilation is soo good, that even the heaviest of smoked out type shows the air stays clear and fresh.
Performances come off feeling much more like a theatrical performance with very attentive, quiet audiences- and much less like a rowdy concert scene at the Fox.
There are also sound issues on the floor everywhere, I always recommend to anyone to sit in the middle of the loge/mezz/balc for the best sound there.
Agreed about the sound; thanks Wanbli for that info. I was in the middle section in the balcony and I thought the acoustics was wonderful actually. Joanna and her voice sounded really lovely last night, tops! And the space is so rich and ornate--a perfect complement to Joanna's style. Unfortunately I couldn't really see her very well from my nosebleed seats.
I do agree that there were some sleepy moments during the show, but I think the new album is a bit sleepy in general compared to the other two. I was also pretty disappointed about no "In Calinfornia," and was praying that she would do "Go Long" and "Cosmia" like at other shows. But with a resume of songs as long as hers, she's gotta keep it interesting for herself and mix things up during such a long tour. I just wish I could go see the other shows on this leg of the tour.
Hearing "Emily" last night was magical and I thought she was spot on for "Good Intentions..."
My favorite part was "Excuse me, I'm a mermaid? Interesting theory." xo
